Impact of COVID-19 on Manufacturing

Manufacturing represents 16% of the global economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has increasingly impacted manufacturers in many countries. Some of these impacts will be temporary, while others will be permanent, leading to an industry restructuring.

As you may know, the first outbreak of COVID-19 occurred in China. Although China is closer than other countries to returning to normal, many supply chains are still closed, causing disruptions for those receiving supplies. Many manufacturers in other countries rely on China for raw materials, plastics, textiles, and electronic products. However, suppliers in China are beginning to lift restrictions with the aim of resuming full production.

We are seeing a significant decline in product demand across many industries as people stay home.

  • Some organizations have been forced to shut down or have redirected part of their production to personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Demand for consumer goods has decreased.
  • The production of smartphones, televisions, and vehicles, for example, has been heavily affected.
  • Food manufacturers face unique challenges.
    • They continue to produce items for restaurants that will be used for takeout orders.
    • On the other hand, demand for groceries has increased by 25%.

Other issues in industrial decline:

  • Fuel demand has significantly decreased, making gas prices extremely low. This is great for consumers but not so good for the oil industry.
  • Since all manufacturers use vehicles and machinery that require fuel, what happens in the oil industry affects everyone.
  • As the crisis progresses, manufacturers must prepare for supply chain bottlenecks.
  • The automotive industry is one of the largest contributors to the production of ventilators and PPE because they have the materials to do so. Other industries heavily affected by the pandemic include chemicals, machinery, electricity, electronics, metals, pharmaceuticals, and medical equipment.

Some organizations are forced to focus on essential business needs and processes, lacking the resources for other projects such as renovations or training. However, it is important to utilize all IT tools to ensure that critical training within the industry is not neglected.

  • There will be significant decreases in productivity if many employees fall ill.
  • Organizations will need to follow all sanitation and social distancing measures to prevent outbreaks.
